Mint - Mentha

Magical uses of Mint

Inner Strength, Love, Relationship and Psychic Communication, Undo a Negative working, Luck

About

Many would say Mint is best used for luck, Protection and communication magic, however we feel this does not reflect Mints true abilities. When you explore Mints story and apply this to its planetary and elemental correspondences, it becomes clear that Mint is best suited specifically for undoing a hex or changing its purpose to a more positive one as opposed to generic protection. Communication is an area Mint can be applied to, however again it can be used more specifically; for Love and standing up for your needs and desires. Mint does this  turn this by encouraging you to discover your inner strength. The origin of Mint as a name helps us understand why Mint is well suited to these specific purposes; The genus Mentha gets its name from the Greek Mintha / Minthe, who was the nymph that held Love for Hades. Many mythological stories offer a lesson, and Mintha's is no different. You can learn more of Mintha’s story at the bottom of this page. In terms of magical correspondences, Mint is a herb of the Element Air and draws on the following properties of Air in particular; verbal communication, focus of mind, adaptability and strength of mind to speak with assertion.

As mentioned above, our suggestion for Mint is for inner strength but in a specific way. Mint is wonderful to use when speaking out against restrictions imposed on you or when your voice is not being heard. When using mint's properties on yourself, it can nurture inner strength and clarity, so you start to focus on your internal thoughts and identify what you believe in. By doing this you are able to formulate a reasoned response or action when you feel restricted or unheard. When using mint's properties for Love, they are best suited for communication work such as seeking out / approaching a lover, to communicate your feelings with a current one or bring success to a date.

Mints Mercurial properties can be used to undo a negative spell working, take a change in direction or create a positive spin to a situation. Mint can also be used for psychic communication by awakening the senses.  Mint is of course known for Luck and it is true it can be used for this, however we would recommend prosperity and good fortune spells when focusing on Love matters or those requiring communication.

Interesting To Know - Mints Origin

Several rivers surrounded Hades, each one comes from a different corner of the Earth. The River Cocytus is one of those rivers, and it is also the river that the nymph Mintha presides over. Mintha was incredibly beautiful, like all Nymphs. When she came into contact with Hades she fell in love with him and Hades felt the same way, so they began exploring their affection with one another. The truth to Mintha's story in terms of how and when this becomes unclear, as with every story there are often three sides to a story and we only have two to draw from for Mintha's ...

What is known for sure is that Mintha was turned into the plant we know as Mint, what is disputed is how this came about. One version tells of Mintha being a lover of Hades, before he decided to make Persephone his wife. When Persephone was abducted, Mintha was cast aside. Mintha considered Hades actions and came to the conclusion that, like many Greek Gods, Hades was being fickle and it would be a matter of time before he returned to her and eventually tired of Peresphone. Unfortunately in the heat of her feeling rejected, Mintha proclaimed to be superior in beauty to Persephone, and declared that Hades would soon grow tired of Persephone and return to her. When the words were heard by Demeter (Persephone’s mother), she transformed Mintha into a weed. Some tell of Persephone herself transforming Mintha.

An alternative version tells of Persephone catching Mintha trying to seduce her husband, and in response Mintha was turned into the garden mint before she could lead Hades astray. Others state that Persephone, in anger, trampled Mentha into the dust. After seeing this Hades turned Mintha's trampled form into a mint plant so that she would live on forever. Yet another telling is of Hades returning home to find Mintha turned into a weed due to Persephone's delouse rage of Hades affection for Mintha. Unable to reverse the spell, Hades instead made Mentha smell sweet and fresh so that any time a man tread upon her, the air would be filled with her sweet aroma, allowing her essence to forever live on.

Mint is known to be sacred to Hades, due to this Mint was often used in funeral rights. So one thing is clear from these stories;  Hades and Mintha were once in love, A deity turned Mintha into a weed or dust and Hades Love for Mintha caused him to find a way of making her live on, by adapting Mintha's situation so it is a more positive one.
